Amberleigh
Published in Paperback by Tor Books (December, 1992)
Author: Carole Nelson Douglas
Average review score:

Read it Twice
I thought that it was a great novel. I completly agree that [the lack of sexual scenes] has a positive impact on the book. I liked the character developement and Amberleigh's sprightly character. It is a fun read and worth a shot.

Amberleigh is definitely a keeper!
This is a great book! I have read a few romance books and have always been discouraged by their sexual content. One major plus about Amberleigh is that there are no sex scenes at all. The book focuses on a young girl who is forced into a lower quality life than she once hoped for, by a friend's mother and a costly death. She accepts this way of life, and therefore proves her true friendship. She struggles with self-image problems, but also stays true to herself and her ideals. It is easy to identify with Amberleigh and her problems. One also can't help but have sympathy for her, as she struggles with more than one dark secret that could cost her life. This is definitely a keeper, and has long since found a spot on my shelf!

Amish: The Art of the Quilt
Published in Hardcover by Knopf (October, 1990)
Authors: Robert Hughes, Julie Silber, and Douglas Tompkins
Average review score:

quilt art
a book with a text written by one of the most important art critics. Finally quilts seen as art pieces. An incredibly beautiful collection of amish quilts to show you the world of this religious group artistic crafts. If you look for new ideas for your quilting palette, don't miss this book.

An excellent investment for lovers of Amish quilts.
Amish: The Art of the Quilt by Robert Hughes chronicles the quilt collection at Esprit corporate headquarters in San Francisco. Begun haphazardly by Doug Tompkins in 1971 as a way to cover bare office walls, it has evolved into a showcase of exquisite examples of Amish artistry.

Robert Hughes writes a concise history of the Amish people and their distinctive quilts. But best of all are the 9" by 9" full-color plates of 82 representative quilts. Julie Silber, who became the collection's curator in 1983, shares her comments on each quilt, pointing out its adherence to or deviation from Amish tradition.

This book represents an excellent investment for all lovers of the vibrant colors and intricate stitching so characteristic of Amish quiltmaking.

The Angel of Ashland: Practicing Compassion and Tempting Fate
Published in Hardcover by Prometheus Books (November, 2000)
Author: Vincent Genovese
Average review score:

surprising compassion in coal country
As a resident of conservative , sleepy Schuylkill County, I was amazed at the foresight and forward thinkingness of this physician. In a county of staunch Catholics, it surprised me that this happened anywhere during those turbulent times , much less here. Mr. Genovese presents this biography in a very straight forward manor that leaves the reader to make up their own mind about this controversial man and issue. As someone who generally does not read biographies, i was hooked from page one. An easy and educational read. Thought provoking

Controversial but an enlightening and entertaining read.
There is no doubt about it; Abortion is a difficult issue for a lot of people. On one hand you have the desire for justice of equal choice by all women, on the other hand you have a great desire to respect and preserve life. I am no different in that it is an issue that I've struggled with at both extremes (Pro and Con) for most of my life. I've concluded that there is no definitive answer that all can agree with. All we can do is to work at respecting life from all views and perspectives. This is why I've read this biography with a very open mind and frankly I'm glad I did!

Having grown up near Ashland, PA I had an immediate interest to read a work by a local author about a local legend. I had heard of Dr. Spencer in hushed conversations of appalling outrage and contempt and I have also in conversations of heroic praise. I wanted to find out more about this "Angel" who dared take a stand and help women through a very difficult time. Meticulously researched and expertly told it is a stroke of luck to come across this text and hold it in my collection. Of all the biographies I have read, this work is one of the best. Genovese's use of descriptive prose and convincing speculation of events he could only imagine occurred is noteworthy of praise and attention. He portrays Dr. Spencer honestly and "re-members" him for the reader in such a way you feel like you know the doctor personally.

This work is for you if you have an interest in the stories and legends of the Pennsylvania "Coal Region". This work is NOT for you if you seek to increase controversy with contempt or without an open mind. Read it as a story of a man who dared make a difference and succeeded with great compassion and non-judgmental understanding at a time where a woman's only choice was a wire hanger and certain death.

Applied Angiography for Radiographers
Published in Hardcover by W B Saunders (August, 1994)
Authors: Paul Laudicina and Douglas Wean
Average review score:

Inspiration
I have absolutely nothing to do with science or radiologic technology, but I picked this book up at the local flea market for 5 dollars and read it from beautiful cover to cover. This remarkable book has now inspired me to go to my local community college and major in RT studies...The authors of the book leave you, with each page of glorious text, thirsting for the next page of scientific poetry and unsurpassed knowledge. The photography is another astonishing feat, rivaling DiVinci's masterpieces in his own scientific texts. If anything in this world can inspire someone into the realm of the skeletor medium of the homosapien... this book is the BIBLE...not only of science, but of literature. Wean and Laudicina are like the Lennon and McCartney of the radiologic universe. Thank you Doug and Paul.

the angiography bible!
This book changed my life. As a 40 year radiologic technician and a teacher of applied angiography, I found this text to be the ultimate resource for teaching and practicing. This is not merely a text book of superior magnitude, but a journey through the most up-to-date procedures and written without the normal boring format held by most texts. Whether browsing the subtext or gazing the beautiful pictures, this book is the key to unlocking the magic of angiography. Thank god for Paul Laudicina and Douglas Wean for their passion and love of this field. BRAVO!

Archetypes of Wisdom
Published in Hardcover by Wadsworth Publishing (January, 1995)
Author: Douglas J. Soccio
Average review score:

PHILOSOPHY RETURNS TO EARTH!
I tried for an hour to desrcibe Dr. Soccio as both a professor and an author but I can't capture the experience in words---see for yourself!

Philosophy Quite Clear
For those familiar with the elusive jargon of most philosophy manuals, this masterful text will come as a pleasant and shocking surprise. It highlights complex thoughts without lapsing into confusing or vague terminology. It also ventures beyond the philosophical triumvirate of Plato, Socrates and Aristotle by introducing the reader to other philosophers frequently over-looked in traditional Phil. texts. Chalked full of modern examples and written in a concise and critical manner, Archetypes of Wisdom is a great introductory host to one of the oldest disciplines in the humanities. An added bonus in this text is the slight, but still present, sarcastic humour of Doug Soccio. I have been fortunate enough to have had Professor Soccio as an instructor and his unique blend of humour and intelligence transfer to the pages in this book. I highly recommend it to anyone with the phil of soph.

Asteroid Impact
Published in Library Binding by Dial Books for Young Readers (August, 2000)
Authors: Douglas Henderson, Toby Sherry, and Doug Henderson
Average review score:

Scary, creepy, and worth every penny
Okay, so "creepy" and "scary" aren't usually words associated with childrens' books...but let's face it, the mass extinction at the end of the Cretaceous period wasn't exactly nice and tame either...
When I first read this book, it gave me goosebumps...in fact, every time I read through it, it gives me goosebumps...the artwork is simply astounding. Henderson is the best of the best: you ARE there when you are looking at his paintings...and these paintings are nothing less than terrifying in their realism. I highly recomend this book to anyone and everyone. Buy one. Buy tons, because this is the closest you will ever get to experiencing the K/T Impact Event.

ASTEROID IMPACT A SMASH!
Douglas Henderson's newest children's book ASTEROID IMPACT is without doubt the best nonfiction dinosaur book for kids to hit the shelves since, well, Henderson's last book. Lavishly illustrated with 28 breathtaking full-color scenes (including the cover) and 6 color diagrammatic illustrations, the book sets up and depicts the scenario of an asteroid impact and its aftermath at the end of the Cretaceous Period, 65 million years ago.

No one is better than Henderson when it comes to rendering dinosaurs and other Mesozoic denizens in their natural habitats, and this book contains what I consider to be some of his best paleolife work ever. Unsurprisingly, he also shows the same affinity and aptitude for astronomical art, presenting a series of awe-inspiring space scenes that simply boggle the mind with their artistry. He starts the 40-page book with several eye-poppingly beautiful scenes of life in Late Cretaceous North America and its environs just prior to the impact, then begins interspersing them with some of the best space art this side of Chesley Bonestell as he begins showing the asteroid's approach. When the mountain-sized rock finally comes hurtling through Earth's atmosphere and smashes into the ocean near what is now the Yucatán Peninsula, so precisely designed and brilliantly executed are the images that one has the overwhelming impression of viewing an actual documentary film of the event.

The book's text is no less an accomplishment, concise and intelligently written, unlike the (sadly) greater majority of cliché-ridden dinosaur books for children that inhabit bookstore shelves, volumes that impart little of real substance and uncaringly continue to perpetuate outmoded ideas. This is Henderson's second outing as writer/artist (DINOSAUR TREE, published by Bradbury Press in 1994, was his first solo effort) and the time and care taken to ensure that this book is accurate and accessible is evident on every page. At no time does he insult his young audience by "dumbing down" his text, yet another common complaint concerning the current crop of dinosaur books aimed at kids. Henderson presents his data in clear, simple language without sacrificing any of the underlying scientific content. A rare feat, and one to be lauded in an age where science, our one true connection to the real world, is all-too-often relegated to the background or, worse, ignored entirely in favor of mindless "entertainment".

Buy this book. Better yet, buy two. Give one to a child who'll appreciate it and keep the other for yourself.

Autobiographies (Collected Works of W.B. Yeats, Vol 3)
Published in Paperback by Scribner (March, 1999)
Authors: William H. O'Donnell, Douglas N. Archibald, and William Butler Yeats
Average review score:

A joy to read and marvellous background
The more I have learnt about Yeats and his life the more approachable and enjoyable I have found his poetry.

I bought this book for a close friend and fellow lover of Yeats poetry and read it after she did. Yeats writes about his life and philosophy with the same skill and breadth he brings to his poetry. I found the notes added for this edition both useful and interesting. I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in Yeats, his philosophy, life and poetry.

This new, standard edition is the first to provide notes.
This new, standard edition is the first to provide explanatory notes. The text has been rigorously checked against earlier editions and manuscripts. The index usefully includes both the text and the notes. (I am editor of the book.)

Just as good as live!
I am also a "Journey Facilitator" and have taken many people to meet their guides BUT, this is almost as good as live. In fact, while using this disk, I decended into trance faster than I have ever done so before, and deeper too. I find this CD remarkable and have recommended it whole heartedly to family and friends and recommend it to you (the reader) also.

It would be a real waste to pass this CD by if you're looking to improve yourself and your life and are on a spiritual quest, no matter what your religion. This is one of the ultimate self-help CD's that I've ever come accross.
